The 7 Days Shira Route is one of the most scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching from the western side of the mountain. Starting at Londorossi Gate, the trail crosses the Shira Plateau, offering spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s western slopes and unique highland landscapes.

The Shira Route is ideal for climbers who want a quieter trail with beautiful scenery. It merges with the Lemosho Route after Shira 2 Camp, leading to Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and eventually Barafu Camp for the summit push.

Shira Route Itinerary (7 Days)

Day 1 – Londorossi Gate to Shira 1 Camp

Elevation: 2,200m to 3,500m | Hiking time: 4–5 hours

The trek begins at Londorossi Gate, passing through lush rainforest before climbing to the Shira Plateau. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp, enjoying panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s slopes.

Overnight: Shira 1 Camp

Day 2 – Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 3,500m to 3,850m | Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Continue across the Shira Plateau toward Shira 2 Camp, surrounded by alpine desert and unique highland scenery.

Overnight: Shira 2 Camp

Day 3 – Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower then Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,850m to 3,960m | Hiking time: 6–7 hours

Climbers ascend to Lava Tower (4,600m) for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp for rest.

Overnight: Barranco Camp

Day 4 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m | Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Climb over the famous Barranco Wall, then trek through Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp.

Overnight: Karanga Camp

Day 5 – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m | Hiking time: 4–5 hours

The trail leads to Barafu Camp, the base for the summit push.

Overnight: Barafu Camp

Day 6 – Summit Day: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m to 3,100m | Hiking time: 10–14 hours

Start around midnight for the summit push to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After celebrating the summit, descend to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.

Day 7 – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m | Hiking time: 3–4 hours

Final descent through rainforest leads to Mweka Gate, where climbers receive their summit certificates and transfer to the hotel.
