Detailed Itinerary

Journey to remote western gate. Begin trek through ancient rainforest. Spot colobus monkeys. Forest camp. (3-4 hours, 6 km, +650m)

Leave forest, enter moorland. Gradual ascent with views opening up. First glimpses of Kibo. (5-6 hours, 8 km, +750m)

Leisurely traverse of Shira Plateau. Short day allows excellent acclimatization. Afternoon hikes available. (3-4 hours, 7 km, +350m)

Climb to Lava Tower (4,630m), then descend. "Climb high, sleep low". (6-8 hours, 10 km)

Conquer Barranco Wall. Short acclimatization day. (4-5 hours, 5 km)
