The 6 Days Marangu Route is one of the oldest and most traditional ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak at 5,895 meters. It is often called the “Coca-Cola Route” due to its popularity and well-established trail.
The Marangu Route is unique because it offers mountain hut accommodation instead of camping, making it a comfortable choice for climbers who prefer not to camp on the mountain. Its gradual ascent profile provides good acclimatization for climbers of all experience levels.

Marangu Route Itinerary (6 Days)
Day 1 – Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Elevation: 1,860m to 2,720m | Hiking time: 4–5 hours
The climb begins at Marangu Gate with registration at park headquarters. The trail passes through dense rainforest, waterfalls, and exotic flora before reaching Mandara Hut.
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Day 2 – Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 2,720m to 3,720m | Hiking time: 5–6 hours
The trail continues through moorland with fantastic views of Kilimanjaro’s slopes. Climbers reach Horombo Hut, a large hut camp in the alpine desert zone.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 3 – Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
Elevation: 3,720m | Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Climbers rest and acclimatize. Optional hike to Zebra Rocks or nearby viewpoints to prepare for the summit push.

Day 4 – Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m | Hiking time: 5–6 hours
The trail ascends through alpine desert toward Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit push. Climbers rest and prepare for the early night departure.
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Day 5 – Summit night: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m to 3,720m | Hiking time: 10–12 hours
Start around midnight for the summit push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro. After reaching the summit, descend to Horombo Hut.

Day 6 – Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m | Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Final descent through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate, where climbers receive their summit certificates and transfer to their hotel.
